What Is Dressember and Why I’m Participating

What Is Dressember and Why I’m Participating

Have you ever wanted to make a difference for an issue you care about but don’t know where to start or who to donate to? I’m participating in Dressember this year by wearing a dress for the 31 days of December.

What Is Dressember?

Dressember is a movement that was started to help bring awareness to the many people who are still enslaved around the world.  Dressember participants help spread awareness about a world issue by committing to the challenge of wearing dresses all month. All month, those who participate spread the word about what they’re doing and why, compelling many others in their lives to contribute to the cause by making a monetary contribution. Dressember gives grants to 12 different organizations tackling the issue of human trafficking in different ways. These 12 organizations are doing incredible work on the ground — from creating the technology to eliminate human trafficking online to assisting at-risk youth with services to keep them out of trafficking situations, to physically rescuing people trapped in slavery in places like South Asia. There is a movement that is truly bringing freedom.

Join Me In Supporting Dressember

You can join me in December by participating in Dressember or you can support my mission by clicking here to donate to my personal campaign page. I’m hoping to raise at least $500.

I’d love for you to participate with me! I’ll be sharing my dresses on social media every day during the month of December. Make sure to follow me on Instagram!

What I Learned From Participating In Dressember

What I Learned From Participating In Dressember

Dressember Recap from Flabby Fashionista

When I decided to participate in Dressember, my goal was to raise money to help women who are oppressed and abused.  I had grand intentions of taking pictures myself in fabulous dresses and sharing them with you but reality was something a little different.

For starters, while there were some really warm days in December, there were also some super cold days in December.  Cold days necessitated that I wear leggings and some dresses just don’t look right with leggings. Also, I’m not sure why, but I couldn’t figure out what shoes to wear with my maxi dresses so I only wore 2 maxi dresses and I only wore each one once .  In the summer, they look great with my flip flops and open toes shoes, but they looked weird with closed toed shoes. I think Dressember would work even better in the summer although they’d need a different name. 🙂

I also thought that I wouldn’t get tired of wearing dresses, but on the super cold days, I just wanted to bundle up in jeans and a sweater.  I also didn’t wear all of my dresses since some of them didn’t look right with leggings and it was too cold to wear dresses with bare legs.

Another thing that I didn’t take into account was how absolutely insane the month of December is for me.  I typically didn’t think about taking a picture until it was practically bedtime…and half the time I was already in my pjs.

The biggest eye opener for me was the amount of clothing I wore.  I wore a total of 11 dresses, but 6 of the dresses I wore multiple times. It made me realize I could survive with a lot less clothing!

Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not planning on getting rid of all of my clothes (although my husband would be thrilled if I did), but I am going to try an experiment this month.  Sometime in the next 24 hours, I’m going to go through my closet and put together 10 outfits including shoes. I’m also going to put 5  or 6 workout outfits together since we hit the gym 7 days a week.  Then I’m going to take all of my other clothes and I’m going to put them in bins in the attic. I’m guessing that this will mean a lot less mess and a lot less time spent getting dressed.  I’ll keep you posted on  how it goes.

Dressember: Day 7 {Plus Sized Outfit of the Day}

Dressember: Day 7 {Plus Sized Outfit of the Day}

Dressember Day 7

So you may have noticed that I skipped Day 5 and 6.  On Friday night, I walked into a restaurant with a wet floor and slipped.  Although I didn’t fall, I did have a series of crazy windmill arms and legs that left my back totally out of whack.  I was in agony all night Friday night and ended up at Urgent Care Saturday morning.

Although she wasn’t able to give me a diagnosis, she gave me muscle relaxers, pain killers, and steroids.  Saturday and Sunday were pretty much a blur of pain killers and muscle relaxers.  Although I did wear dresses, I didn’t think to take pictures.  Also, I pretty much was only out of my pjs for a few hours each day.

So this is my Monday outfit.  I’m still a little drugged up and in pain (and it shows in my face), but at least I was comfortable!

The dress is a maxi dress I picked up at Kohl’s this summer.  The fabric is super comfortable.  The sweater is something I picked up at Nordstrom Rack while I was in Florida last month.  I absolutely love it.  It’s the softest sweater ever.  I would wear it every single day if I could…and I just might! 🙂

I’m wearing my Cole Haan Air Tali Wedges again.  I love that they look like dress shoes but that they have a rubber sole and feel like you’re wearing sneakers!

Dressember: Day 4 {Plus Sized Outfit of the Day}

Dressember: Day 4 {Plus Sized Outfit of the Day}

Today is Day 4 of Dressember. This has been such a busy month that I haven’t had the time to stage my pictures…I just pause in the middle of the craziness and get one of my kids to snap a picture. I started the day with my hair and makeup done, but after some craziness at work this morning and then doing a zillion other things, my hair style was non-existent so I threw it back into a low ponytail and my makeup was pretty much a goner (which is why I look like I have no lips).

Dressember Day 4

The dress I’m wearing is one of my favorites.  I picked it up on the clearance rack at the Lane Bryant Outlet a few months ago for $10.  It’s super comfortable to wear and I love that it came with a cute little belt.  The shoes I’m wearing are probably the shoes I wear most frequently when not wearing my Ariat boots.  They’re made by Cole Haan and they are the Air Tali Lace Wedge.  I wish I they had these available in more colors.  They have the Nike Air technology and so they look like a dress shoe but feel like a sneaker!

I decided to mix up my accessories a little today and I wore a necklace!  Not just any necklace though…this one is an essential oil diffusing necklace!

I also am wearing these Ombre Prism earrings again from Noonday Collection.

I totally forget to take off my Vivosmart exercise and sleep tracking before this picture was taken so you get to see that too! 🙂

Dressember: Day 3 {Plus Sized Outfit of the Day}

Dressember: Day 3 {Plus Sized Outfit of the Day}

It’s Day 3 of Dressember and I decided to wear something other than a brightly colored dress and my  Ariat boots. 🙂

I had a dinner to go to tonight for The Crossing (which is a really cool organization) so I thought I’d dress up a little.   I love this animal print fit-and flare dress from JCP.  It’s comfortable to wear and it doesn’t wrinkle. 🙂  The fabric also has some nice stretch to it.  I wish the lighting in this picture was better so you could get a better feel for the outfit.

Here’s a rundown of what I wore:

Animal Print Fit-and Flare-Dress
Soma Sweater Shrug (I couldn’t find it on their website, but I got it fairly recently)
Bandolino Wide Calf Black and Brown Boots  (these aren’t identical to the ones I am wearing in the picture, but they’re pretty close.  🙂
